Downtown Photo TourRELATED PAGES Downtown Las Vegas is where the city was born on May 15, 1905, when lots were auctioned east of the new railroad station (on today's Plaza hotel site). Before the Strip was started, in 1941, gradually gaining notoriety, it was downtown where all the excitement took place. Fremont Street was "the street" bordered with casinos and tourist attractions, nicknamed Glitter Gulch. In 1996, vehicles were prohibited to drive on a four-block stretch of Fremont St and the Fremont Street Experience, a pedestrian mall whose main attraction is the Viva Vision canopy featuring light shows set to music, was born; the canopy with 12.5 million LED modules (bulbs) stretches the length of five football fields.
