Fremont Street ExperienceWhen Las Vegas started, in 1905, Fremont St was one of the few streets of the new town. In 1996, the street was closed for traffic and the "Fremont Street Experience" attraction came into being. The promenade starts at Main St, across from Plaza, and ends at 4th St, across from Neonopolis. It is covered by a canopy 90 ft high containing 12.5 million LED lamps, making it the largest LED screen in the world. The new VIVAVision system, which cost $17 million, started in June 2004. The light and sound show runs every hour between dusk and midnight. One hundred twenty-one computers control the lamps generating animated images, and 208 speakers produce 550,000 watts of sound. Bands perform on stages at the First and Third streets. Another attraction is the Neon Museum, started in 1997, which collects and exhibits the old Las Vegas neon signs. Most signs are in "The Boneyard," but some have been refurbished and are on display around Fremont St. |
