TaxisRELATED PAGES There are 16 taxicab companies in Las Vegas (and Clark County). All companies charge the same rate. A $1.80 airport tax charge applies additionally when a passenger hires a taxi at the McCarran airport or the McCarran Rent-A-Car Center (see Car Rental). Approximate fares for common trips are available at the Nevada Taxicab Authority website. About 2,000 taxis are on the roads of Las Vegas at any time, day or night. Taxis are not allowed to pick up or drop off people in traffic (main roads where cars are or may be coming). All major hotels and shopping malls have taxi stands; it's the easiest way to get a taxi. You can also call a taxicab company and ask for a taxi, even make arrangements for a specific time when you need a taxi. Making arrangements with a taxicab driver (getting his or her cell phone number) is another option. Some taxis are "geographically restricted"; they are not allowed to pick up customers on the Strip, downtown, or at McCarran airport (note the red plaque on taxi doors). A few cab companies are restricted to certain areas. For example, A-Cab taxis can pick up passengers only west of Interstate 15; Deluxe Cab taxis can pick up passengers only south of Sunset Rd, about a mile and a half south of the Strip. All taxicab companies have a lost-and-found department; note the name of the company when you hire a taxi, and you won't have to call all companies should you lose something in a taxi. All taxicabs are equipped with cameras. You may be videotaped and recorded. A taxicab driver must take the most direct route, unless instructed otherwise by the passenger. A taxicab driver may refuse to transport a passenger, unless provided with a specific address or destination. It is a crime to enter a Las Vegas taxi without sufficient funds to pay the fare.
