SearchlightSearchlight, hometown of Nevada Senator Harry Reid, is located 45 miles from Las Vegas, on highway 95 leading to Laughlin. It started as a mining town, producing gold and other precious metals at the beginning of the 20th century, when it reached a population of 1,500. Its name may come from the Searchlight brand of matches George Frederick Colton used when he discovered gold ore in that area. About 700 people live in Searchlight today. The town is also a gateway to Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave. See more information about Searchlight at #. |
