Red Rock Canyon
The
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (197,000 acres) is located
about 15 miles west of Las Vegas. The 13-mile scenic drive through the
desert provides views of the valley, unusual rock formations, and signs
of early Indian life. You can see Joshua trees, several species of cacti,
and other desert shrubs and plants. There are signs to watch out for wild
burros, and you'll probably see a few. Forty-five animal species are peculiar
to this canyon, including big-horn sheep, cougar, wild horses, burros,
fox, coyote, and bobcat. There are 30 species of reptiles and amphibians
in the river areas. Dangerous animals are the rattle snake, scorpion,
and the Gilla Monster lizard (they do not attack unless disturbed).
Two more sites are worth visiting:
- Bonnie
Springs, Old Nevada. 875-4191. A 115-acre park, motel, museum, train,
restaurant, petting zoo, cowboy shows.
- Spring
Mountain Ranch. 875-4141. Historic site, ranch house, visitor center,
one-way scenic drive.
